In this lab, students work with a complete hemodialysis system to explore the principles of blood filtration and fluid balance. Using a pulsatile blood pump, students simulate blood flow through a dialyzer (hemodialysis filter), where waste and excess fluids are removed. The peristaltic dialysate pump circulates dialysate solution, facilitating the exchange of solutes.
Students adjust flow rates to examine how changes affect the ultrafiltration rate, learning how to maintain fluid balance between the blood removed from and returned to the body. The objective is to reach a controlled equilibrium, ensuring that fluid loss does not exceed safe limits while achieving effective filtration—mimicking real clinical goals in dialysis treatment.
