About the lab

In this lab, a volunteer uses a sterile lancet to prick their fingertip, and the resulting blood droplet is collected into heparinized micro-hematocrit capillary tubes. Prior to the prick, the skin is disinfected using an isopropyl alcohol prep pad. The filled tubes are sealed and spun in the CritSpin Micro-Hematocrit Centrifuge to separate blood components and calculate the individual’s hematocrit. A glass slide may be used to prepare smears for visual inspection, and an adjustable micropipette is available for transferring small blood volumes if needed.
