Surface properties

Cold Spray is a surface engineering technique used in the field of materials science to modify the surface properties of materials, enhancing their performance and mechanical characteristics. Since the outermost layer of a material is the primary interface with the environment and other surfaces, tailoring its properties is crucial in various applications. Key surface characteristics often targeted include wear resistance, erosion resistance, icephobicity, hydrophobicity, biocompatibility, corrosion resistance, thermal conductivity, hardness, and others, depending on the functional requirements.

Selected projects

  • Rotary blades of helicopters increase in erosion resistance using Cr₃C₂-NiCr

  • Icephobic Perfluoroalkoxy Alkane Coatings for preventing ice accretion

  • Development of accident tolerant fuel (ATF) claddings for nuclear energy applications

  • MCrAlY coating for improved oxidation performance as bond coats in gas turbine engines thermal barrier coatings (TBCs)
