
The prenatal period is the term used to describe the gestational period from conception to birth. Exposure to adverse environmental factors can induce changes in the epigenome as early as in utero. During the prenatal period, there are periods of sensitivity where exposure to these stresses can induce such epigenetic changes to the fetus. It is crucial to limit fetal exposure to such stresses, especially during sensitive periods, to reduce changes to the fetal genome.

Proper nutrition is very important during pregnancy. Eating well provides the necessary nutrients needed to produce energy, feel well, and support a healthy pregnancy. Vitamins, specifically folic acid, are especially important to consume during this period. Folic acid in particular can help protect the fetus from neural tube defects.
Mental and physical health must be taken care of throughout pregnancy. It is normal for emotions to vary throughout pregnancy and oftentimes, those emotions are linked to physical health.
