Epigenetics

What is Epigenetics?

The study of how environmental factors such as behaviours and the environment can cause changes that affect the way genes function. Epigenetic changes are reversible and do not change the DNA sequence, however, they can change how the body reads a DNA sequence by acting as a switch that can turn genes “on” or “off”.

Impact on Health

Epigenetic changes begin before birth and continue throughout life. These changes can be added or removed depending on the presence or absence of environmental factors. Epigenetic changes can impact a person’s susceptibility to infections and cancer.
