In Defence of the Written?: Constitutional Legitimacy Beyond Constitutional Text: September 10, 11:30am-1pm

On September 10, from 11:30am-1:00pm, the Centre will host visiting doctoral candidate Diego Platz Pereira for a workshop on the legitimacy of unwritten constitutionalism.

Unwritten constitutional law occupies a familiar place in Canadian constitutional thought, yet the concept remains remarkably contested in many civil law jurisdictions. Drawing on the German and Brazilian experiences, this talk explores this unease in conceptualizing constitutional law from the perspective of the unwritten in constitutional adjudication, even though courts frequently develop constitutional norms beyond the constitutional text. It discusses how this tension reveals deeper assumptions about constitutional legitimacy, constitutional authority, and the enduring authority of written constitutions.

Academic Freedom in an Era of Democratic Backsliding: October 1, 5-7pm

The uOttawa Public Law Centre, in collaboration with the Law Commission of Canada, is pleased to welcome Professor Nomi Claire Lazar for a public lecture on academic freedom and the rule of law.

Professor Lazar will examine the vital role universities play in sustaining democratic societies and explore the challenges that academic freedom faces amid growing polarization and democratic backsliding.
