CHG 4360/ 8191:

Have you ever thought why your rain jackets don’t get wet? Do you know how your non-stick cooking pans work? If you want to learn how to design sustainable waterproof material for outdoor sports taking inspiration from nature, this course is for you. This course will introduce aspects of nature inspired surface engineering, interfacial interactions, surface hydro wettability, anti-icing, oil affinity, and how these properties can be employed for a sustainable life on earth. Various surface modification techniques (such as laser micromachining, plasma coatings, solvent induced recrystallisation) on different materials as metals, nanomaterials, biodegradable polymers will be introduced in this course. Students will learn the basic concepts of surface characterisation techniques as electron microscopy, spectroscopy, particle analysis. In addition, the challenges of scaling up and applying surface modification in the industrial scale will also be covered.
