About Me

My name is Owen Barr, and I am currently a first year Teacher Candidate at the University of Ottawa. I am in the intermediate/senior stream, studying the teachable subjects of physical education and biology. With that being said, this year I have had the opportunity to branch out with a practicum placement in grade 7 math and art classes at St. Micheal’s Catholic High School.

Prior to the B.Ed program, I had opportunities to experience being a teacher through other avenues such as teaching swimming lessons, coaching ski racing, and teaching physical literacy programming in elementary schools through my undergrad.

My philosophy on teaching has been built on my many previous teaching experience, as well as me recent professional learning in the bachelor of education program. I believe that caring and showing that you care for your students, your co-workers, and for the position of an educator is essential to being successful. I know through my own personal experiences that showing genuine empathy and compassion for students lets each individual know they are appreciated. In turn, when students feel their individual experiences are seen, heard, and respected, they are more likely to buy in to what you are teaching.

Lastly, I believe it is crucial to understand that the journey of learning is never complete. As I am in university I am still learning a lot professionally and personally, but it does not just end when I graduate. I truly believe that learning happens everyday, it can be from courses, piers, and even students. So I will continue to look to improve my knowledge base, reflect upon all opportunities, and be open having my prior knowledge challenged.

On this website I will share artifacts of the professional learning that I have gained through my time so far in the bachelor of education program. These events, workshops, lessons, and assignments continue to shape my philosophy of education for my future in teaching.
