Math Stock Market Game
Originally created as an assignment for teacher’s college, I was able to integrate this game into my practicum with great success. Students were very engaged with the chance format, and many students got to experience the thrill of seeing their investments rise in value. No previous knowledge of the stock market is required to be successful in the game, thus, it is accessible and engaging for all students.
Around the World and Back Activity
This activity was directly related to a lesson that I gave on world currencies. In the lesson, students learned about some of the different global currencies that exist and how to calculate the conversions from one currency to another. This activity gave students the opportunity to show me what they learned in a way that allowed them to use their creativity. They got to pick three countries, for each they would have to state their currency and show me a sample calculation of how you would convert Canadian currency into their foreign currency. From there they would plan a trip to that country, researching the prices of things like hotels and food, and converting those prices from Canadian into the foreign currency.
Plan a Party Presentation Fair
This was the final project for the unit that I taught on financial literacy. Students were tasked with planning a party with a specific theme in mind within a given budget of $450. They would have to allocate their budget on things like food, drinks, desserts, and entertainment using prices from flyers found online. Part of their mark was based on how close they could get to spending the entire $450 budget without going over Furthermore, they had to create an invitation for their party, showcasing their theme and important details. This invitation would be the starting point for the presentation fair, in which students had the opportunity to walk around the classroom and engage with other groups about the details of their parties.
